Whitworth University Symphony Orchestra

The Whitworth Symphony Orchestra performs the standard orchestral repertoire as well as modern and commissioned works, including a recent premiere of Gwyneth Walker’s “Let America Be America Again”. The orchestra also performs with guest soloists and winners of its annual concerto competition, and has enjoyed side-by-side concerts with the Coeur d’Alene Symphony.
Philip Baldwin is the Director of String Studies and Professor of Violin at Whitworth University where he has taught for the past thirteen years. He received his training with many eminent teachers including Rafael Druian, Raphael Hillyer, Yuri Mazurkevich, Andrew Jennings, Alan Bodman. He earned a DMA in violin performance at Ohio State University under the instruction of Michael Davis.
Baldwin is the concertmaster and assistant conductor of the Coeur d’Alene Symphony, and has appeared as soloist in concertos by Barber, Wieniawski, Beethoven, and Bruch, and the Brahms Double Concerto with principal cellist, Mika Hood. He is a former member of the Spokane Symphony and served previously as principal second violin of the Akron Symphony and principal viola of the LaCrosse Symphony, in addition to section positions with the Tacoma, Canton, and Columbus symphonies.
He serves as the conductor and Artistic Director of Spokane Youth Symphony, and organization which attracts the top students from all around the inland Northwest to its four orchestras. An active recitalist, he has appeared many times with pianist Judith Schoepflin and has recorded a CD of clarinet trios by Khachaturian, Ives, and Bolcom with clarinetist Michael Dean and pianist Carol Stivers.
