Description

In cooperation with the National Gallery of Art of Washington, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; curated by Molly Donovan with John J. Curley, Anthony E. Grudin, John G. Hanhardt, Calie Angell and Matt Wrbican.
Warhol is represented in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna by one of his "political still lives": Hammer and Sickle (1972), one of the works of the series properly dedicated to hammer and sickle, whose source of inspiration was Italy.
The exhibition "Warhol: Headlines" is made up of a consistent group of works gathered together for the first time, whose main theme is the "news" elevated to artistic levels. Warhol reminds us that an event, even a shocking one, does not turn into a piece of news unless it is translated into a title, unless it gets a graphic form. In this exhibition the relationship between Warhol and the media is for the first time not analyzed through his icons (celebrities' portraits or ads) but through linguistic symbols. Less known than the Marylin or the Ketchup Heinz series, this stage of his production presents more connections with other artistic phenomena, such as  conceptual or visual poetry, or as the carrying out of important cooperations with other artists ( Keith Haring ).
