For a whole day, starting at 9 PM on December 31st, 2018 and ending at the same hour of January 1st, 2019, celebrate the arrival of the new year crossing geographical, cultural, social boundaries with more than 100 performances, 1000 artists from 46 countries of the 5 continents.

22.45 pm Performance of the Kitonb Carillon, Il volo del tempo, a great show of urban theatre that develops between the earth and the sky, with an innovative setting in which spectacular moving machines, gigantic flying scenographies operated by hydraulic cranes and choreographic actions of acrobat-dancers create a three-dimensional show that involves the viewer at 360°.

Installations for the Festa di Roma

A series of installations will be activated starting from 00.00 along the path of the Festa di Roma to build an ideal continuation between the Circo Massimo and the day of January 1st. Visitors are invited to share lunar worlds, raise their eyes to the sky and let themselves be captivated by the images and light shows. The acclaimed Australian artist Amanda Parer will bring her huge humanoid giants into the streets with Fantastic Planet Humanoid "Down Here" and the pedestrian walkway from piazza dell’Emporio will be dotted with a series of flags made as part of the project Le Bandiere della Luna by Studio 54 (Teatro di Roma), which will exchange with some helium-inflated spheres and will draw a sort of constellation along the guard rail of Lungotevere Aventino at different heights.

Immersive experiences are proposed by the Italian group Quiet Ensemble (Fabio Di Salvo and Bernarndo Vercelli) with the site-specific work Ephemeral that will lead the viewer in an ephemeral space in constant mutation between colours, stroboscopic rainbows, storms and dawns - and by the organization MySquare (founded by François Moncarey) with the geodesic Dome, where the viewer will be surrounded by 360° multimedia works entirely dedicated to the moon and the planets (Fondazione Romaeuropa). Entering the interactive audio-video installation ONNPeople, by FLxER Team and Ipologica, viewers can shape the visual rendering of the images projected according to their visual and auditory sensations (Azienda Speciale Palaexpo). The monumental and luminous sculpture Photon, made by the Hungarian Koros Design with an ingenious geometric structure, recalls a shooting star designed by a child and magically landed on the bank of the Tiber, while the installation Museum of the Moon by the English artist Luke Jerram, will orbit in the skies of the Festa di Roma: an enormous inflatable moon, suspended in the void and illuminated by the inside, with a 7 meter-diameter faithfully reproducing the lunar crust using the high resolution images made by NASA (Azienda Speciale Palaexpo). The installation is accompanied by an enveloping soundtrack, specially created by the composer Dan Jones, winner of the Ivor Novello and BAFTA awards.
The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia proposes the installation Riflessi di luna in collaboration with the CMR-Centro Ricerche Musicali. This is a sophisticated acoustic and visual environment, created with Holophones - sound projectors, which will offer to the general public some classic works of the classical and contemporary repertoire reworked for the construction of the sound architecture of the project.

January 1st  at 07.00 am - Giardino degli Aranci
Greeting to the new sun

For the dawn of January 1st, the Giardino degli Aranci will be animated with the 100 Chitarre orchestra, directed by Maestro Tonino Battista, led by the soloists of the PMCE - Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble and formed by amateur electric guitarists gathered by the Fondazione Musica per Roma through a public call. On this occasion the PMCE will perform a world première original composition commissioned by Maestro Michele Tadini for an ensemble of one hundred electric guitars.

The Festa di Roma in the Libraries

The Libraries of Rome will organize from 10 am to 1 pm of January 1st La luna gira il mondo with four events for adults and children in the Cornelia, Laurentina, Goffredo Mameli and Vaccheria Nardi libraries, to start the year with the communities of foreign citizens coming from Africa, Latin America, Indian Subcontinent, Middle East and Arab Countries. An initiative of exchange and mutual knowledge that will involve 78 artists from over 30 countries worldwide in workshops for adults and children, dance and cooking events, theatre and music workshops, readings and tastings of various cuisines of the world. The Vaccheria Nardi Library will host a morning entirely dedicated to Africa with rhythms, dances, fun activities, the market of African handicrafts and the exhibition "African Mothers" by the photographer Mimmo Frassineti. At the Biblioteca Laurentina, a journey through the voice of migrants will make the public aware of the richness of Latin American culture, including music, dance, cooking, workshops and meetings. The Goffredo Mameli Library opens its doors to the culture of the Indian subcontinent: Indian music, from the oldest traditions to popular songs, the art of building kites, animated readings, Indo-Pakistani cuisine, and the "Street India" exhibition of photographer Gabriella Sanna. At the Cornelia Library flying carpets and other references to the Eastern world with tales of One Thousand and One Nights, dance workshops with Afghani, Kurdish and Azeri music, demonstrations of the art of Arabic calligraphy, and the concert of lute, percussion and dance by Saleh Tawil and Karimae.

Opening the great street party is the impressive Rome Parade, curated by Destination Events, which will be attended by about 450 American artists, including marching bands, jazz bands, choirs, dancers and cheerleaders. Among the groups involved: Lambert High School Marching Band (Georgia), Schurr High School Spartan Legion (California), Thousand Oaks Marching Band (California), Varsity Spirit Cheerleaders (USA), The Big Easy Jazz Ambassadors (Louisiana), Shawnee Mission East High School Jazz Band (Kansas), Hickory Ridge High School Choral Ensemble (North Carolina), Lambert High School Chorus (Georgia).

January 1st from 3.15 pm to 09.00 pm - Area between Piazza dell'Emporio, Giardino degli Aranci, Circo Massimo Lungotevere Aventino, Lungotevere dei Pierleoni and Isola Tiberina

The festival is conceived as a journey through thematic routes that deal with the theme of the moon from different angles: the "lunar" landscape, science, cinema, music.

Entrance from Piazza dell'Emporio: the lunar landscape
Up to the Lungotevere Aventine, the route will be animated by the "constellation" of inflatable flags and spheres as part of the installation Le Bandiere della Luna by Studio 54 (Teatro di Roma). L’Orchestra all’improvviso by the Teatro dell’Opera will perform on the same stretch, and in a series of flash mobs that will let passengers direct it; in the late afternoon the show Gueule d'Ours by the French company Remue Ménage (Teatro di Rome) will accompany the spectators along the way with a parade of great illuminated bears and extravagant dancers.

Proceeding along Lungotevere Aventino you will meet the installations created by the Stalker Teatro (Teatro di Roma) in the interactive performance Steli, which will invite spectators to create a large sculpture with coloured plastic tubes.
At the Clivio di Rocca Savella, thanks to the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, it will be possible to attend the Silent Moon Cineconcert of the Piccola Orchestra of Tor Pignattara, a multi-ethnic orchestra made by young musicians between 17 and 20 years, which perform a live sound event with the science fiction movies of the silent era A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès and A trip to Jupiter by Segundo de Chomón.

The huge inflatable and luminous moon of the installation Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram (Azienda Speciale Palaexpo) will rise from the terrace of Giardino degli Aranci and will be visible along the way and from many parts of the city.
At the beginning of the small garden that separates the Lungotevere Aventino in two streets, a huge 15-meter sculpture depicting a man observes that great moon hoisted in the sky becoming with it the cornerstone of the whole party. This is an inflatable giant by the Australian artist Amanda Parer as part of the Fantastic Planet Humanoid project "Down Here" project (Teatro di Roma).
In the afternoon before dusk, still on that stretch, we can see the performance of the acrobats of the Belgian company Cirq'utaltion Locale (Teatro di Roma) that defy gravity with the spectacular performance of the "crossover" circus Moving Poles, in a game of dance, lights, special effects with a strong visual impact.

Entrance from via della Greca: Science
We are introduced to the theme of the entrance to the festival of Via della Greca, which is the most linked to the scientific and astronomical aspect, by the visual and sound installation Riflessi di Luna by the CMR-Centro Ricerche Musicali (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia), realized with Holophones - sound projectors, and the monumental and luminous sculpture Photon, by the Hungarian Koros Design (Azienda Speciale Palaexpo), which represents an elementary particle that is turned into a giant shape through an ingenious geometric structure, consisting of live tubular elements that support each other. Both at the height of the gardens between Lungotevere Aventino, Via di Santa Maria in Cosmedin and Largo Petrucci.

A little further on we find the large installation Dome (Fondazione Romaeuropa), a geodesic dome in which the viewer is completely surrounded by scientific videos entirely dedicated to the moon and the planets created by the MySquare group, in an immersive experience of great charm but also of an educational and informative nature.
To complete the quadrant linked to science, which from Via della Greca reaches Piazza Bocca della Verità, there comes the show K@osmos of the Spanish Grupo Puja! (Teatro di Roma in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes) that will fly in the air in a cosmic dance, simulating planetary revolutions.

Entrance from via Petroselli: Cinema
In a suggestive dome installation, destined to bring the overarching magic of cinema at the Festa di Roma, a film made by Virginia Eleuteri Serpieri and Gianluca Abbate will be screened, inspired by the Moon's imaginary, in the fiftieth anniversary of the first landing on our satellite. The materials used, thanks to the collaboration with Istituto Luce - Cinecittà and Raiteche, will allow to rework images of the historical Archivio Luce and suggestions from the famous "lunar walk" broadcast live by RAI on the occasion of the first moon landing, using digital animation techniques and CGI (Computer Generated Image). The project, curated by Giorgio Gosetti and Mario Sesti, is realized by Fondazione Cinema per Roma in collaboration with Casa del Cinema.
Martux_M (Musica per Roma) will take care of the sound;, with the project Apollo 11 Reloaded, he will offer two live sets of electronic music, after which, the music produced will remain in loop on the images.

Entrance on Lungotevere dei Pierleoni: music
A grand piano suspended eight meters above the ground together with two artists will play fragments of soundtracks of the most famous movies related to the moon and science fiction in the show Flota ... Dos of the eclectic Spaniards David Moreno and Cristina Calleja (Teatro di Roma), whom will be followed by the orchestras of the Scuola Popolare di Testaccio distributed between Piazza di Monte Savello and Via di Foro Olitorio, also involved this year by the Fondazione Romaeuropa.

Besides the big parade with marching band and cheerleaders at the opening of the festival, the Roma Parade in collaboration with Destination Event, there are many parades that will accompany the route in all directions: Les Interventions Mobiles created by the pyromusicians Les Commandos Percu (Teatro di Roma), which will perform moving percussion, fireworks, and lights; La Transumante, the great walking wooden creature created by the award-winning circus artist Johanne Le Guillerm (Fondazione Romaeuropa), consisting of one hundred and sixty blocks of three meters in length and animated by ten performers; and then the two great parades that will involve the citizens thanks to a public call: in Via Petroselli the festa itinerante dell’Orchestra Popolare Italiana dell’Auditorium Parco della Musica, conducted by Ambrogio Sparagna (Musica per Roma) and on Lungotevere dei Pierleoni Cammino Popolare, the collective choreographic action led by Virgilio Sieni (Fondazione Romaeuropa) accompanied by the traveling concert of the bands Fanfaroma, Titubanda e Fantomatic Orchestra della Scuola di Musica Popolare di Testaccio as well as the Coro di Voci bianche del Teatro dell’Opera. The Scuola di Musica Popolare di Testaccio (in collaboration with the Scuola di Musica Popolare di Donna Olimpia, l’Associazione Culturale Titubanda e l’Associazione Culturale Insiemi Sensibili) as well as accompanying the march of Virgilio Sieni will be involved in a program of permanent and moving concerts presented by different groups and ensemble marked by the contamination between musical genres and styles representing different territories and traditions: Mandolins like salami, Avenida America, Italian Jazz Swingers, Giulia Salsone Group, Go-Dex Quartet, ESTESTEST! Balkan Popular Sound.

Organized by the Libraries of Rome, a series of performances will come from Piazza dell'Emporio to via Petroselli: Afro-Peruvian music and dances by Fernando Delgado and Robinson Moreno; the concert of percussion, oudh and voices of Rashmi Bhatt and Saleh Tawil; the concert of percussion, sitar and voice of Rashmi Bhatt and Sagheer Khan; the traveling concert of Coro CoroIncanto, Voci femminili senza confini with songs from all over the world; four performances of Persian dances by Elnaz Yousefi; the show of the traditional dance group organized by the Panafrican Women Association in the Diaspora; the concert of the Coro degli Angeli Universitari with dance and gospel music.

Via Petroselli, Palazzo dell'Anagrafe from the side of Lungotevere Pierleoni and Palazzo dello Sviluppo Economico will be animated by suggestive lights and by the music of the PMCE - Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble (Fondazione Musica per Roma) which, in the formation of the double quintet, will pay tribute to one of the fathers of minimal music, Steve Reich, through the performance of his 2x5.
The external facades of the Palaces will instead be mapped with games of shapes and colours to support the aerial dances of the company Cafelulé (Teatro di Roma), with the show Bianco that will create original optical games between motion graphics, choreography, technology and movement, by the company Danza Verticale - Il Posto (Fondazione Romaeuropa) with his performance Il Gigante, able to bring together music, dance and acrobatics, and of the French duo Mattatoio Sospeso (Teatro di Roma) that will drag spectators into an acrobatic story with romantic nuances suspended at 10 meters from the ground with Les amants du ciel.
In the gardens at Piazza della Bocca della Verità La Luna Bianca by the Compagnia dei Folli will conquer the public with an acrobatic "moon fairy", elegantly suspended in the sky, attached to a pale and luminous sphere - precisely, its moon.

Finally, particular emphasis will be given to the work of Berliner Philipp Geist (Fondazione Romaeuropa), an artist renowned worldwide for his visionary video mapping works, able to re-read the historical places of the different cities through an intelligent stack of colours, light stimuli, images and writings, which will transform the Isola Tiberina into a screen on which to project his magnificent creations.

Within the "In viaggio per la luna " event, from December 27th 2018 to January 6th 2019, in the afternoon of January 1st  the following films will be screened at the Casa del Cinema: at 4.00 pm Moonstruck by Norman Jewison (USA, 1987) and at 6.00 pm Il giovane favoloso, by Mario Martone (Italy, 2014).
