Description

SANTA MARIA DELL'ANIMA The church of Santa Maria dell'Anima is the Chiesa Nazionale Tedesca, that once also comprised the Fiamminghi and the Olandesi. It was built in 1500 circa and was restored in 1843. The high Renaissance façade, already attributed to Giuliano da Sangallo, has a horizontal crowning, on three orders, each one tripartite by flat pilaster strips. The three classical portals, with fluted columns, with composite capitals and tympanum, already attributed to Peruzzi, are now considered works by Andrea Sansovino. The bell-tower, attributed without any basis to Bramante, is among the most beautiful ones of the city: with Renaissance mullioned windows is crowned by ledges with railings, Gothic-style pinnacles and Ionian cusp. The interior has three naves divided by curious asymmetries by pilasters in cruciform sections, high and subtle, and with side chapels that rise up to the vault. The interior structure of the church is altogether the typical one of the German "Hallenkirchen" (church-hall).
