Description

The church’s construction started in1580 by the end of Giacomo della Porta following a miraculous healing of a blind woman thanks to the icon of the Madonna retrieved there. The simple façade recalls that one already adopted in the Chiesa del Gesù: divided into two orders joint by lateral volutes, it is crowned by triangular tympani and divided by flat Corinthian pilaster strips and four niches. Inside the church, in a unique nave inspired to the Jesuit model, one treasures some pictorial examples very representative for the period: in the Cappella della Pietà one treasures the altar piece by Antonio Viviani (a copy of the Pietà by Michelangelo) and the frescoes by Lattanzio Mainardi and Paris Nogari. The frescoes on the vault, the dome and the gallery are by Cristoforo Casolani. Moreover the church holds the tumb of the French saint Benoit-Joseph Labre who died outside the church in1783. His clothes are treasured as relics.
