Description

The church has been one of the first "tituli", the places of christian cult in Rome. According to tradition, the church achieved its name by Pope Marcello I who was condemned to slavery by Massenzio. The previous Romanesque structure was destroyed by a fire in 1519 and rebuilt by Jacopo Sansovino with a single nave and many chapels richly decorated on both sides. The baroque and weighty concave façade is by Carlo Fontana (1682). The third chapel to the right hosts frescoes with life scenes of Maria, a work by Francesco Salviati. The next chapel’s decoration was interrupted by the plundering of Rome in 1527. Perin del Vaga, Raffaello’s student, escaped and the frescoes were completed by Daniele da Volterra and Pellegrino Tibaldi. The nave hosts a splendid tumb in Venetian style by Sansovino, dedicated to Cardinal Giovanni Michiel and his nephew Antonio Orso.
