Description
The construction of the church is due to the initiative of Don José León Gallardo, an Argentinian priest, who wanted to erect a new church at his own expense in the district where he had begun his priestly service.
Following the approval of Pope Pius X in this regard, Don Gallardo purchased the land in 1910 and on 9 June 1910 the foundation stone of the new building dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Our Lady of Sorrows was laid.
In 1929, the use and usufruct of the National Church of Argentina was ceded to the Order of Mercedarians, who undertook both to finish the work quickly and to take care of the preservation and good condition of the Church and adjoining buildings. It was established that the Rector would always be a Mercedarian religious, Argentinean by birth. The Mercedarians completed the work, and on 1 November 1930 the church was inaugurated.
