Description

The small church is located next to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, attached to the Aurelian Wall and the Amphitheatre Castrense.

In 1476, Pope Sixtus IV had the Oratory of Santa Maria del Buon Aiuto, which originally stood between Santa Croce and San Giovanni, rebuilt. Tradition has it that the pope was caught in a violent thunderstorm and took refuge close to the Aurelian Wall, where he was protected by an image of the Madonna. Right there, he had what is now called the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Help built, where the sacred image is still kept.
