Description
Moved from the Capannelle Fire Fighting School to the historic Fire Brigade Barracks in Testaccio, the collection spans a vast period of time, from the 3rd century A.D. when the militia vigilum, the first organisations to deal with fire hazards, already existed, to the present day.
Ancient fire engines are on display together with fire-fighting equipment, historical uniforms and more modern equipment such as those for interventions against radioactive or bacteriological hazards. There are also scenographic reconstructions of the fire in the Borgo district in 847 AD, in the Ripetta harbour area in 1734 and the scene after the bombing of the S. Lorenzo district (1944).
A small laboratory allows visitors to experiment with different combustion phenomena.
