Description

Founded during the period of Rome's transformation into the capital of Italy, the Galleria di Piazza Colonna is one of the city's best known and most fascinating places, both for its central location, the quality of its architecture and the myth that has always accompanied its visitors.

The Gallery, like the Piazza Colonna it overlooks, takes its name from Marcus Aurelius' Column, known as Antonina, erected between 176 and 192 AD; the square is surrounded by some of Rome's most important historical buildings: Palazzo Chigi, Palazzo Wedekind and Palazzo Ferrajoli.
The structure was designed with different characteristics from the other Roman palaces, but it fitted perfectly into the urban fabric of the capital, responding to the needs of the rising middle class to live a worldliness marked by family walks, meetings at the café and purchases in elegant shops.

The shopping centre that emerged in 2003, after the complex restoration work carried out by the Lamaro Group, is now a large prestigious, modern and at the same time historic gallery: the exceptional location, in the heart of Rome, where there are many historical and artistic presences, the considerable catchment area, the continuous presence of Italian and foreign visitors, the excellent public transport links, make the building a privileged place not only for commerce, but also for exhibitions and cultural events.

In 2009 Galleria Colonna in Rome, renamed Galleria Alberto Sordi, was acquired by the Sorgente Group.
