Description

The Casina dei Vallati in Via del Portico d'Ottavia consists of a building brought to light during the demolition work carried out from the 1920s onwards to free the structures of the nearby Theatre of Marcellus.

During the demolition of the large block of which it was part, in fact, substantial portions of medieval constructions were identified, and it was decided to preserve them and restore them. The restoration was carried out between 1929-1932 (unfortunately after the partial collapse of some parts) on the basis of a project by Paolo Fidenzoni, director of the restoration of the nearby Theatre of Marcellus. The name given to the casina derives from the Vallati family, who owned numerous properties in this area of the S. Angelo district between the 13th and 14th centuries.

The present complex has Renaissance features on the corner towards the Portico d'Ottavia and Via del Foro Piscario: in this part, in fact, the valuable original 16th-century marble portal has been preserved, and the travertine panels of some of the windows recovered during the demolition of another building in the area have been remounted. In the remaining part, in the direction of the Theatre of Marcellus, the characteristic elements of the 13th-century medieval building prevail: the loggia on the first floor, the portico on the ground floor, wall structures with tufa or brick facings, windows with marble frames and some peperino mullioned windows with two lights reproduced in style.

Since 1933, the building has housed the offices of the Antiquities and Fine Arts Department of the Municipality of Rome, now the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage.
