Description

The Pleistocene deposit of La Polledrara is located about 20 km northwest of Rome, on the peripheral slopes of the Sabatino volcanic apparatus. It was identified in 1984, and represents one of the richest existing palaeontological deposits.
The archaeological excavation includes both a section of the ancient riverbed and an area of marshland, where numerous faunal remains have been preserved. The riverbed measures approximately 35-40 m in width and 1.5 m in depth.

The discovery of numerous fossil remains attributable for the most part to the ancient elephant and the primitive ox has allowed us to hypothesise an intense human and animal presence in the marsh environment. In particular, the skeleton of an elephant trapped in the mud was brought to light, and the skull of a wolf was found between its vertebrae. In addition to the fauna, over 500 stone artefacts were collected, consisting of small flint and siliceous limestone pebbles, which do not belong to the fluvial-palustrine environment of the deposit and were certainly transported by man.
The deposit is protected by a 900-square-metre museum structure; a raised walkway allows visitors to visit the archaeological excavation.
