Description

Immediately after Rossini's death (1868) Verdi proposed a suggestive idea to his publisher: all the major Italian composers should have participated in the drafting of a mass in memory of the great musician from Pesaro. This mass would have been performed on the first anniversary of Rossini's death in the church of S. Petronio in Bologna. At first the idea was accepted with enthusiasm, so much so that Verdi composed the final part of the mass, the “Libera me”. However, the enthusiasm waned early and nothing was done about the 'multi-handed' mass. The turning point came in 1873 with the death of Alessandro Manzoni towards which Verdi had an immeasurable esteem. The death of the great scholar prompted the composer to resume the project, but this time Verdi would have been the only one to complete the whole mass. The first execution, one year after Manzoni's death, took place in the church of S. Marco in Milan on May 22, 1874 under the direction of the same author. The Italian public immediately decreed the imperishable fame of this great masterpiece. Shortly thereafter, the Requiem crossed the peninsula to find the legitimacy of its greatness abroad. In both London and Paris and in Vienna (never tender with Italian music) the Requiem was met with continuous success. Verdi's extraordinary dramaturgy made it something human, tangibly tragic: a Requiem in which reflection on death becomes reflection on faith and therefore man's struggle with himself.
