Description

The nature reserve of Valle dei Casali lies between the suburbs of Monteverde, Bravetta and Trullo, and partly borders with Villa Pamphilj. The name comes from the many, now mostly disused, farmhouses (casali) in the park (a census ten years ago counted as many as 76 buildings). The landscape consists of a plateau that gradually slopes down to the Tiber with a series of hillocks. Besides the river, the reserve is crisscrossed by a network of water ditches. The area is mostly farmland and grazing land. The trees include oaks, maples and brooms, while the wetter areas contain willows and poplars. The animals include the hedgehog, weasel, barn owl and four-lined snake. The site also contains the 18th century Villa York, named after Cardinal Clement (Duke of York and son of King James II of England), and the Buon Pastore monumental complex.
Notes: Protected area.
