Description

S. BARBARA DEI LIBRARI Thechurch was built in the C. XI century andconsecrated in 1306, in the area where  there was the  theatrethe theatre ofPompey. In 1601 ClementeVIII assigned it in 1601 to the Università dei Librai (Universityof the booksellers) and added the name of S. Tommaso d’Aquino,patron of the booksellers, to theat nameof S. Barbara also that of S. Tommaso d’Aquino,patron of the bookseller, was united. In 1680 the church wasreconstructed in a bBaroque style, but after 1670, following thedismissal of the fraternity, it was abandoned and no longer used for religiuospurposes.  Between 1990 and 1993 importantrestorations were initiated. Onthe facade there is a portal with two couples of columns on each side. Theupper part holds thestatue of S. Barbara inside a rounded niche the statue of S.Barbara. Theinterior has a single nave with lateral chapels. On top of the entrance thereis a seventeenth- centuryorgan of great value. Inside the church can be foundone can find awooden crucifix of the fourteenth century from C.XIV and atriptych, “Madonna con Bambino e i Santi Michele arcangelo e Giovanni Battista”(1453).
