Description

During the first half of C. VII Onorio I ordered the construction of a church by the margins of the Roman Forum, dedicated to Santa Martina, who became a martyr in Rome in 228.
Sisto V then conceded the church to the Design Academy, considered of San Luca in 1588. The reconstruction was entrusted to Ottaviano Mascherino who was then succeeded by Pietro da Cortona in 1635. The church was finally completed in 1669, year when the artist passed away. The convex façade with two orders ends with a big fascia on which the Urbano VIII’s coat of arms, held by angels, towers over. The dome with the little lantern appears backwards compared to the façade. The Greek-cross plan of the interior embodies columns and pilasters, while on the single nave’s floor one finds the tomb slab of Pietro da Cortona. In the church, the crypt, and the sacristy one finds masterpieces by famous artists from the 1600s, such as Alessandro Algardi and Sebastiano Conca.
