Memories on this very antique church date back to 337. Already known as "Titulus Fasciolae" (for the legend that the Apostolo Pietro let the bandage that covered his foot wound caused by the chains fall here, upon escaping from the Mamertino jail), it was rebuilt by Pope Leone III around the year 800. Almost entirely rebuilt during C. XV, it was had restored and decorated with splendid frescos by Cardinal Baronio in 1597. In front of the modest façade, with a protyrus shaped like an aedicula, one finds a Roman granite column with a capital decorated with lion heads, surmounted by a cross. The austere interior of the basilica consists of three naves, divided by arcades on fifteen-century pilaster with an octagonal section, covered by open air trusses. On the walls one may admire frescos by Pomarancio portraying "Storie di Martiri", showing raw realism. Very interesting are the presbyterial ornaments. The episcopal chair, with two lions attributed to the Vassallettos’ shop, remodeled during the Gothic period, with a dorsal consisting of a marble niche that bears the incision of a long passage from the XXVIII homily by San Gregorio, who pronounced it on the tomb of the two saints.
