Description

SAN SABA In San Saba, by the slopes of the Aventino hill, the church that gave the district its name seems to somehow mirror its discreet atmosphere. During C.VII it was dedicated to the monk of Cappadocia, leader of the oriental monasticism, and built on the place where the house-oratory of Santa Silvia (mother to San Gregorio Magno) was located. The church became patrimony of the Greek monks until C. XI, when it was entrusted to the Benedictines after the Scisma d'Oriente. The building’s façade dates back to the Romanesque period just like the opposite porch, underneath which a sarcophagus and diverse other ruins are treasured, while the elegant gallery, with arches on granite columns, dates back to 1400. The interior has three naves, divided up by fourteen antique columns with various capitals, and is rich of remainings of paintings dated C.XIII that still treasure the original splendor.
