Description
The Museum of Anthropology “G. Sergi” was founded in 1884, at the same time when the first chair for Anthropology was assigned to Giuseppe Sergi. It is housed in its current location since 1938. It keeps collections and specimens regarding the evolutionary history of Man, of enormous anthropologic, paleontologic, and primatologic interest. Great deal of the material exhibited consists of human specimens, belonging to more than 6,000 individuals of the prehistoric, protohistoric, and recent ages, coming from necropolises on all continents. An Egyptian mummy and two Neanderthalian fossils dated back 120,000 years are among the most significant specimens. The fossils were found near Rome in the resort called Saccopastore. A collection of instruments of experimental psychology of the end of the nineteenth century is exhibited in addition to the collections of fossils. The Museum also hosts scientific and didactic-divulgative activities on the Natural History of Man.
