Piazza della Repubblica

Typology: Streets and squares

Address

Address: Piazza della Repubblica
Zone: Rione Castro Pretorio (Porta Pia) (Roma centro)

Description

Built at the end of the 19th century to provide the "important" access from the station to the city, it follows the curve of the large stepped exedra of the nearby baths.

In the centre the fountain of the Naiads (or of the Exedra) replaced the simple Acqua Pia exhibition inaugurated by Pius IX in 1870 where the monument to the Fallen of Dògali stands today.

The part of the square between the fountain and the NE side corresponds to the calidarium of the adjacent baths: only the niche remains, in which is the access to the basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, built in the more monumental rooms of the central body.
