Description

The building complex, founded in 1686 as a hospice under the Pope Innocent XI Odescalchi, was considered a model of organisation and public assistance in Europe, as it housed not only orphans and needy children, but also old people and spinsters. The original function of sheltering and correcting the weakest members of society was flanked by an educational one, with an art school and a professional workshop (wool mill, tapestry, printing works).
Purchased by the State in 1969 to house the offices of the then General Directorate for Antiquities and Fine Arts (now the Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities), the Monumental Complex has undergone consolidation and restoration work since 1973, and currently houses the headquarters of the ICCD, which can be accessed from number 18 Via di San Michele, as well as the General Directorate for the Landscape, Fine Arts, Architecture and Contemporary Art.
