Description
The mausoleum is situated just off via Salaria, at the crossing with via Basento. It can be dated back to the last years of the first century BC. It has a circular plant and presents a tambour with a diameter of about 113 feet. The core of the tambour is paneled with blocks of travertine. The tambour wascovered by a conic heap of earth about 53 feet high. A large inscriptionat the center of the tambour shows the name of the owner of the tomb LuciliusPetus, the military tribune and prefect of blacksmiths and cavalry, who builtthe mausoleum, when he was still alive for himself and for his sister LuciliaPolla. A vault-covered corridor leads to the cross-vaulted tomb. Only one ofthe funeral beds that were situated within three niches is still preserved. The tomb was soon abandoned and already filled in in the Trajan Age (98-117 AD).The mausoleum was reused in the fourth century AD, when a series of smallmasonry tombs, destroyed during the excavations, were laid against the externaltambour, while its interior was transformed into a small catacomb.
