Description

The hypogeum is situated near the Via Salaria, in an area that contained a series of tombs in ancient times. It came to light in 1923 during the construction works for a building, around 250 metres away from the Aurelian walls. The hypogeum is a long rectangular underground building (21x7 metres) with the short southern end containing an apse and the northern end containing three arches. Below the major, central, arch there is a deep rectangular basin separated from the rest of the environment by marble transennas. In the wall there is a niche decorated with paintings depicting imitation marble slabs. Above the niche there is a painting of a vase-shaped fountain on which two doves are drinking, while another two doves are seen among floral elements. The left wall depicts the hunting goddess Diana between two deer, while the right wall depicts a nymph stroking a roe-deer. The western side wall contains a mosaic fragment depicting Saint Peter drawing forth water from a rock that serves to quench the thirst of the centurion Cornelius, who was converted and baptised by the apostle. Below there is a fresco depicting a marine scene. The building’s function is still uncertain, but it is an interesting example of combining Christian and pagan themes. Among the many hypotheses put forward, the most convincing seems to be the one that considers the hypogeum as a nymphaeum, that is, a monumental fountain. The building is thought to date back to the latter half of the 4th century AD.
