Description

This funerary monument is considered to be one of the most impressive tombs of the ancient times. It is situated in a small park at the forth kilometer of the Via Tuscolana, right after Porta Furba. Since the Middle Ages it was called "Monte del Grano" (Mountain of Wheat), because its shape is similar to a moggio (a cone-shaped vessel used to measure wheat) turned upside down. A long corridor leads to the tomb that was a two-storied chamber covered with a vault. The magnificence of the tomb induced to believe that the owner was an emperor or a member of his family, although we cannot exclude that it may have belonged to a senatorial family of high nobility. The cover of a sarcophagus discovered here in the sixteenth century and now kept in the Capitoline Museums represents two figures firstly identified erroneously as the Emperor Alexander Severus (222-235 A.D.) and his mother Julia Mamea. Later the discovery of stone stamps belonging to the age of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 A.D.) found in the walls of the monument and the type of construction technique used, brought to date its construction prior to Emperor Alexander Severus. A tower that was also reproduced in an engraving by Piranesi was built on top of the mausoleum in the sixteenth century. It collapsed during a storm in 1900.
