Description
The Severan Arcades are a very important archaeological document: built in a period included between Domitian and Maxentius Empire, these architectural structures have a functional purpose and attest the costruction engineering skills of Roman builders, which compensated the site characteristics to create complex and sumptuous palaces.
The arches are very high and narrow, built on two levels, according to a well known module used to construct bridges and aqueducts. The function of these structures was to widen the buildings on top of Palatine hill, where it wasn't possible due to the outline of the hillside.
From the top of the architectural structure, it is possible to enjoy a beautiful sight of the ancient and modern Rome: especially the imperial tribune and its access corridor, built at Circus Maximus by Domitian and widen by Maxentius. It is possible to admire also the so called "Stadium", created by the same architect Rabirius who was in charge buiding the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus.
Unusual and amazing the way lights and shadows play at sunset, enhancing the beauty and the atmosphere of the archaeological site.
