Description

From 4.00 pm to 8.30 pm on 19 February, in the context of the Renato Nicolini. Urban Wonder programme devised by Marilù Prati, Ottavia Nicolini, Raimondo Guarino and Pasquale Minieri, in collaboration with Carla Romana Antolini, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni will be hosting IMAGES OF ANOTHER CITY, a small-scale retrospective of films in which Renato Nicolini is at once the actor and (occasionally also) the screenplay writer, accompanied by lectures from some of the directors, writers and architects who devote their unflagging energy to the city of Rome today. Taking his cue from his own Urban Wonder idea, Renato Nicolini, Rome's councillor for culture from 1976 to 1985 and the man who dreamed up the Roman Summer, gave the city back a sense and a feeling of public life by planning and organising events and meetings, mobilising untapped or hidden energies, and working with his young assistants to forge new dimensions in cultural experience, such as the season of movie retrospectives at the Basilica of Maxentius or the now legendary screening of Abel Gance's Napoleon at the Colosseum. These events fuelled a new form of socialising, bringing together audiences comprising thousands of people to form a multifaceted crowd that reshaped both the well-known and the unknown areas of Rome. The evening's screenings will include: Talking About Rome directed by Egidio Eronico, GRA-So Many Potential Futures directed by Gianfranco Rosi and Utopia, Utopia directed by Maurizio Cascavilla. The focus will be on Rome, its architecture and the city in the eyes and words of Renato Nicolini, in his ironic yet visionary outlook, in the polemical and thoughtful gaze of a man who was at once an architect, a politician and an artist. The evening will be attended by the councillor for the urban transformation of Rome, Capital City, Prof. Giovanni Caudo, himself an architect, who has accepted our invitation to take part to the event at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni retrospective with an address designed both to pursue and to renew the debate on the modernity and relevance of Renato Nicolini's thought and action, and to link it to the opening of Rome 20-25. New Life Cycles for the Metropolis, an international workshop recently inaugurated at the MAXXI museum of contemporary art involving both Italian and international universities in the production of readings, visions and projects for the Rome of the future. Our speakers for the evening will also Prof. Raimondo Guarino; Prof. Elisabetta Pallottino, architect; Marilù Prati; Egidio Eronico; Prof. Franco Purini, architect; and Giorgina Amendola, architect.
