Dominique Szymusiak
Musée départemental Matisse, Le Cateau-Cambrésis
Dominique Szymusiak explores the unexpected and contorted - though by no means far-fetched - link between Memling and Henri Matisse, to whom the Scuderie del Quirinale will be devoting a sweeping monographic exhibition in the spring of 2015. As a man of the north, Matisse was the natural heir to a long figurative and plastic tradition stretching way back to the early Flemish painters. It is to such artists as Van Eyck and, particularly, Memling that we need to look in order to identify the origin of the sumptuously decorative approach that Matisse endeavoured to rediscover, to bring up to date and to pass on fully four centuries later.
