Description

The mathematics that is generally taught at school has the feeling of an unchangeable construction, the exact science by definition that has not changed since Newton's day, or maybe even since Euclid. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. This cycle of lectures sets out specifically to demolish the myths and to show Joe Public exactly what mathematicians are up to today and the interesting directions the discipline is moving in.  In a cycle of four lectures on four different areas of study and research, some of the most illustrious exponents of the prestigious Italian school of mathematics will be talking about problems, models and applications; but also recounting fascinating intellectual adventures, because as Georg Cantor put it, "the essence of mathematics lies in its freedom".
