Federica Veratelli discusses the life, work and careers of the Italian merchants, bankers, agents and diplomats who lived in Flanders in the late 15th century, using unpublished archive material to offer us an astonishing insight into the lives of Hans Memling's patrons, shining the spotlight in particular on several members of the Florentine Portinari family (Tommaso, Folco and Benedetto).
