In Seoul, Lee Jin-tae and his younger brother Jin-seok, a student, are trying to escape to the south at the outbreak of the Korean War, but both of them are forced to enlist and drafted to the frontline without any proper training. Concerned about his brother’s life, Jin-tae reachs an agreement with a commander who promises to send Jin-Seok home if he wins a medal of honor. So Jin-tae, not for patriotism but brotherly love, starts his dangerous mission to become the war hero. KANG JE-KYU    강제규 Il New York Times descrive Kang Je-kyu come “lo Steven Spielberg dell’Estremo Oriente” dal momento che i suoi film si rivelano regolarmente dei blockbuster, creando coinvolgenti storie di genere su argomenti d’identità nazionale. E’ il caso del suo primo film “The Ginko Bed” (1996) con i suoi contenuti folk, e ancor più con “Swiri” (1999), un thriller d’azione su un serrato confronto tra agenti dei servizi segreti sudcoreani e nordcoreani. “Taegukgi” guadagna più di 14 milioni di dollari, appena meno dell’ultimo film di Kang, “My Way” (2011), ambientato durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. The New York Times describes Kang Je-kyu as “the Steven Spielberg of East Asia” because his movies routinely become blockbusters building compelling genre stories around questions of national identity.
