Description

France 1961, directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Emmanuelle Riva, b/w, 130’, 35mm Italian dubbed version

In Besançon, during the German occupation, a young Jewish communist widow goes into a church to confess her sins. But her real intent is to provoke the young local priest. Yet he manages to build a meaningful relationship with the woman, who will end up falling in love with him. An apparently uncharacteristic film in Melville and Belmondo's body of work, it succeeds in exploring the relationship between faith and secularism in those complicated times, with extraordinary participation and sensitivity.
