Description

CHIESA DI S. STEFANO DEL CACCO The church was built during C. VIII on theruins of the votive temple of Iside. It owes its name to the Egyptian statueportraying a monk that was retrieved during the construction period, and whosename was then melded into “cacco”. Restored in C. XII, in 1563 the church wasexpanded by the Padri Silvestrini who ordered the building of a convent. The seventeenth-century-façade marked bypilaster strips, includes a portal surmounted by the dedicatory inscription. The interior embodies a plan with three navesdivided by twelve cipolin columns, African marble and oriental granite. The sixfrescoed chapels, moreover, house paintings carried out by Italian artists fromC. XVI and XVII.
