Description

S. SPIRITO DEI NAPOLETANI Eversince 1574 it has belonged to the homonym Confraternita that rebuilt it on thebasis of a drawing by Domenico Fontana or Ottaviano Mascherino in 1619. Significantlyrenewed by Carlo Fontana (1704) and Nicolò Forti (1772), in 1834 the church wasentrusted to Vincenzo Pallotti, founder of the Ordine dei Pallottini andrestyled by the architect Antonio Cipolla in 1853. The façade is in two travertine ordersarticulated into pilaster strips. In the lower order one finds a portalsurmounted by a fresco by Pietro Gagliardi portraying the “Spirito Santo inGloria”. In the upper one, one finds a rose window whose sides show weaponsfrom Pio IX and the Regno delle Due Sicilie. The interior embodies a vaulted single nave. Inthe third chapel to the left one finds the “Martirio di San Gennaro”, masterpieceby Luca Giordano. The church also houses the tombs of the last Borboni soverignof Naplesand the two Sicilies, Francesco II and Maria Sofia.
