Description

The church of Santa Susanna was built on the place where the Saint underwent the martyrdom. At first it had a basilical shape, as one might deduce by observing the walls’ windows, and it is decorated by mosaics in the apse, dating back to the time of Leone III’s Papacy (795). It was rebuilt in 1475 by the order of Pope Sisto IV and further reduced to one nave in 1595 by the hand of Cardinal Risticucci. It was completed in 1603 with the completion of the high façade by Carlo Maderno. The church represents a firm example in the development of Baroque architecture and is one of the first of the kind. It has two orders: the first one includes the portal and two niches with a tympanum with statues by Valsodo and richly framed tables; the second one, with pilaster strips, joins the lower order via elegant volutes and holds a great balcony and two other niches with statues by Stefano Maderno. The richly decorated interior, with a single nave, contains four enormous frescoes by Baldassarre Croce that represent "Scene della vita di Santa Susanna martire romana e della Susanna biblica".
