Description

S. MARIA IN MONTERONE The church’s origins date back to 1186. Onebelieves that it was founded by the Monteroni family from Siena and it hadannexed a hospice for the Sienese pilgrims. Restored in 1245 and 1597, it waslater rebuilt in 1682. Thefacade embodied two orders articulated into double pilaster strips. The latteris crowned by a triangular tympanum which bears a dedicatory inscription to theVergine Assunta inside. Theinterior, subdivided into three naves delimited by eight antique Ionian columns,is covered by a barrel vault. On the high altar one can admire theeighteenth-century-“Madonna tra San Pietro Nolasco e San Pietro Pascasio” probablypainted by Pompeo Batoni.
