Descrizione:
S. ANTONIO ABATE ALL’ESQUILINO Built in C.IV and later transformed in thechurch of “S. Andrea Cata Barbara”, it is situated on the area of the Romanbasilica of Giunio Basso. The church of S. Antonio was founded in 1308 near itshomonym hospital (1263-66), reconstructed in 1481 and changed many times until C.XVIII,when it finally obtained the actual neoclassic style. In 1928 the Holy Seepurchased the entire complex in order to build the Russicum College (whichlater became the famous centre of soviet and oriental studies). In 1932 Pio XIordered works on the facade and the portal by Antonio Munoz, handing the churchto the Jesuit fathers of the Russicum College. The facade keeps the majestic Romanesque portal(c. 1262-66), the sole testimony of the ancient hospital. The interior, with eight-century designs, has athree nave plan divided by pilasters. The church, modified in order to performthe orthodox rite, presents a partition with three doors. In the centre onefinds the “Royal Door”, open only in the solemn moments of the celebrations. Atthe beginning of the right wing nave one meets with the chapel dedicated to S.Teresa (Domenico Fontana, 1583), with eighteenth-century stuccoes. The drum ofthe dome was frescoed by Nicolò Cirignani (1585).
