Description

The church of St. Anne is closely associated with the palafrenieri, gentlemen of the court with duties of trust in the area of minor tasks. The saint has always been venerated as their patron saint, so much so that in 1378, when the confraternity was erected, she was chosen as their patron saint. In those days, the pallbearers used to pray at the altar erected by Urban VI in St. Peter's.

This was the case until 1565, when it was decided to build the present church. The project was entrusted to the architect Giacomo Barozzi known as Vignola. Between 1577 and 1581 the work was suspended due to financial problems of the confraternity, but in the following years the construction was completed and in 1583 it was inaugurated.

On May 30, 1929, with the Apostolic Constitution Ex Lateranensi pacto, Pius XI established the pontifical parish of St. Anne in the Vatican, entrusting its care to the Augustinians.
