Description
S. TOMMASO DI CANTERBURY Itwas already renowned in C. VII under the name of SS. Trinità degli Scozzesi. After the jubilee years of 1300 and 1350 the increase in the number ofEnglish pilgrims in Rome made it necessary to build a hospice which was then annexedto the pre-existing church. In 1579 Gregorio XIII entrusted the entire complexto the Jesuits, who then turned the hospice into Collegio Ecclesiastico forEnglish students and restored the church. After a further restoration during C.XVII the church, remarkably damaged in the late 1700s, was rebuilt on the basisof a project by Pietro Camporese il Giovane and completed in the second half ofC. XIX by da Virginio Vespignani. Thechurch’s right side is on Via di Monserrato, and there it opens with a portalin Romanesque eclectic style, sided by four oculi topped by arched windows. Theinterior includes a simple rectangular plan with three naves divided by sevencolumns. The church also holds numerous funerary monuments, like that forTommaso Dereham, a work by Ferdinando Fuga.
