Description
It is one of the oldest Christian churches in Rome. It was built between C.IV and V on the Lucina mother house, and rebuilt by Pope Pasquale II around 1100. He also ordered the porch with granite columns, Ionian capitals and the bell-tower with the last three floors embodying double mullioned windows. In 1650 it was restored by Fanzago. Under the porch one finds tombstones, marble fragments from the Middle Ages and a basrelief by Tenerari (1825) in memory of Cecilia Severini. The interior is from the 1600s with a single nave and a panelled golden ceiling. In one of the chapels, under the altar’s mess, there is an urn with the grill where San Lorenzo was martyred. Another chapel not to be missed out is the "Fonseca" by Bernini, also known as "Cupoletta con Angeli suonatori".On the high altar, by Carlo Rainaldi. (1675) one finds the "Crocifissione" by Guido Reni.
