Description

S. MARIA DELL’ORTO It owesits name to its location on an area that was previously covered by vegetablegardens. On one of the border walls a portrait of the Madonna was once painted, who has been traditionally attributed miraculous events. In 1492 the faithfulthus ordered the building of a little chapel on this location while theconstruction was started in 1495. The lower part of the façade was started byVignola (1566-68) and completed between 1576 and 1577 by Francesco da Volterra. The church was then restyled a few times first during the 1600s and then in themid 1700s, then restored with the annexing of a new bell tower in 1825. The façade embodies two orders. The centralportal is framed by two columns and is sided by two secondary entrances. On theupper order one finds a window surmounted by a clock (1705). All of this isthen crowned by a tympanum sided by small stone obelisks. The interior embodies three naves with threechapels per side and is rich of eighteenth-century-stuccos, crafted by LuigiBarattoni and Gabriele Valvassori. The nave in the middle is decorated by thefresco “Assunzione della Vergine” by Giacinto Calandrucci (1706). On the highaltar one finds the venerated portrait of the “Madonna col Bambino” (mid C.XV). More remarkable frescos (”Storie della Vergine”) by Taddeo e Federico Zuccari (1560) are held in the apse.
