Description
The church of Santa Maria dell'Orazione e della Morte extended itself over the cemetery of a brotherhood that was here founded during C.XVI to gather up the unknown corpses and give them a christian burial. On the eighteenth-century façade by Ferdinando Fuga, a graffito plate representing the "Morte intenta ad osservare un cadavere" is located amidst pilasters, pilaster strips and macabre decorations of winged skulls used as corbels. On the main entrance there is an hourglass symbolizing death. In the oval-shaped interior were moved the frescoes that adorned the Farnese hermitage, a work by Giovanni Lanfranco representing figures of hermits. The crypt holds the burials of the brotherhood with characteristic macabre compositions.
