Description

The first church dedicated to St Lorenz was constructed in the ninth century on the site where, according to tradition, the saint  underwent his martyrdom on the grill. In 1300, Pope Boniface VIII  had the church reconstructed with an abbey annexed to it, that was given to the Benedictines in 1451. In 1574 Gregory XIII ordered its restoration and from now on the church was called of San Lorenzo in Panisperna, probably due tothe fact that on the 10th of August, during the festivity for the saint, free bread was donated to the poor. The two order facade is preceded by a staircase with two ramps dating back to 1893, built because of the lowering of the road. The lower order has a wooden door (1664) sculpted with the images of the Sts. Lorenz and Francisc. On the upper order there is a small niche with a triangular gable on top. The single-nave church, with three chapels on each side, has a vaulted ceiling with frescoes by Antonio Bicchierai dating back to the 18th century. The grill, where according to tradition the saint was burnt, is housed in the crypt.
