Description

In 1270 a group from Piedmont, Nice, and the Savoy that was coming back from the eighth crusade created a little community in Rome. In 1597 the latter founded the Confraternita del SS. mo Sudario with the aim of doing charity for the poor. Under Sisto V (1585-1590) the Arciconfraternita obtained the construction of a church dedicated to the SS. mo Sudario. Works began between 1603 and 1605 after a project by Carlo di Castellamonte (1560-1641). The new façade was created by Carlo Rainaldi (1690). After the restoration in the 1800s, in 1871 the church was consecrated again and went under the patronage of the Royal House of Savoy. Today it is kept by the Cappellani Palatini. The small facade opens up with a portal surmounted by an arched tympanum sided by two portals. On top of the ledge there is a big window crowned by a tympanum bearing the Savoy’s coat of arms in the middle. The interior includes a unique nave with the vault frescoed by C. Maccari (1840-1919). In the bottom, on the high altar, is the painting “Gloria di Angeli con il Padre Eterno” and a canvas copy of the Sacred Shourd (sixteenth-century-work by Maria Francesca of Savoy).
