Founded together with the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro (1939), it had the task to collect information concerning the restoration works done in the entire National territory. With the passing of the years in the Archive came primarily information and photographic documents concerning the restoration work of the same Institute on works pertaining to public bodies or coming from private collections. Worth is the diagnostic documents, namely concerning the scientific surveys done on the works with particular problems of conservation and restoration. It is about 4,500 radiographies; 2,500 photographic fiches concerning stratigraphic sections and microbiologic and chemical surveys.  The most precious fond of the Archive is formed by gelatin and silver bromide plate glass negatives produced by the photographic lab of the Institute. In addition to the uniqueness and the historicity of the images they reproduce, they are historical documents of the evolution of the photographic technique.
Notes: It is possible to buy B&W and colour photos, copies or prints of slides, but only concerning the completed restoration of the work of art. If you need documents of different phases of the restoration, it is necessary to write to the Director of the ICR.
