Description

The Canonica Museum is immersed in the green of Villa Borghese, located in the eighteenth century building known as "Fortezzuola" that Antonio Asprucci built on a seventeenth century coop.
The Museum keeps the works of the Piedmontese sculpture and musician Pietro Canonica (Moncalieri 1869 - Roma 1959), who lived and worked in the building given to him by the Municipality of Rome in the twenties. At his death according to his will, the works were donated to the City that collected them in this museum dedicated to him.
The exhibition halls and the study together make up a significant example of house-museum.

A visit to the museum provides complete documentation on the artist and his world. It contains valuable furniture, Piedmontese nineteenth century paintings, Flemish tapestries, and the artist’s very work tools. The sculptor’s technical ability and interpretative capability are evident in his many female portraits (the portrait of Franca Florio, Ruth, together with more anonymous subjects such as The Communicants, Spring Dream, Remembrances); in the commemorative and funerary monuments, in the sacred subjects and in the allegoric works (Abyss, Tomb of Laura Vigo, Monument to Kemal Ataturk, Saint Peter and Saint Paul).
