Description

The Civic Museum of Zoology is situated within the Bioparco (Zoological Garden) and was founded in 1932 through a convention between the University of Rome and the Governorship of Rome. The first collections belonged to the Institute of Zoology and were successively increased with material from the zoo itself. The Museum keeps about four million pieces. The material is exhibited in 18 halls in a taxonomic order and consists of collections of Italian birds, insects, shellfish, of a collection of fauna from the Roman Campagna and of the recent acquisitions of paleontologic findings. The osteological collection (mounted skeleton apparatuses) is of particular interest, being one of the most important in Europe. It includes the skeletons of a finner of more than 50 feet in length and of an African elephant.
