The Museum Ostiense was set up by Pope Pious the Eleventh in 1865-66 to keep the materials of the excavations in Ostia, initially placed in the castle of Jules the Second. The Museum today is housed in the fifteenth century "Casone del Sale" (Big House of Salt). It includes a collection of statues (Roman copies of Greek originals), various Roman portraits, clay and marble tables with representations of art sand trades, various types of furnishings and glass, ivory, and bronze objects. A group of testimonies of oriental cults, sarcophagi, funerary and domestic wall paintings, polychrome mosaics, and a magnificent decoration with marble marquetries that comes from a building discovered near Porta Marina.
Notes: The visit to the Antiquarium comprises the visit to the excavations of Ostia Antica.
