Description
The antiquarium Malborghetto is located within the casale (farmhouse) of Malborghetto and keeps archaeological materials that come from the surrounding areas. The materials are Roman vases found in the furnaces near La Celsa and sixteenth-seventeenth century ceramics, discovered in an underground chamber of the farmhouse. Two togated beheaded statues found at Grottarossa and a funerary urn from Tor di Quinto are also exhibited. The origin of the farmhouse and of the adjacent hamlet is dated back to the construction of an imposing arch on the via Flaminia on the spot where Constantine is said to have had the vision of the cross before the battle of Ponte Milvio against Maxentius. In the course of centuries it suffered various transformations and destinations of use: first it was a church, then a fortified residence, later a rural farmhouse with a stage post. It was lastly purchased by the State in 1982 and destined to be an antiquarium. Restoration works and diggings revealed the existence of a Medieval necropolis, in addition to the apsis of the church.
