Description

The statue is now in Piazza Vidoni, next to the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle. It had originally been in the adjacent Palazzo Caffarelli Vidoni and then was for a short period in the courtyard of Palazzo Chigi in Piazza Colonna. It depicts a now headless man wearing a toga and dates back to the late Roman Empire. It seems the name Abate Luigi (“Abbot Luigi”) derives from its likeness to a shrewd sexton of the nearby church of the Santissimo Sudario. The statue was one of the “talking statues” on which the populace used to hang theso-called “pasquinate”, that is, anonymous satirical maxims and verses expressing public discontent with the papal authorities.
