The square near Piazza Colonna owes its name to the long row of columns of the Temple of Hadrian, incorporated into the large building, now seat of the Stock exchange, once the seat of the Land Customs (Dogana di Terra). Pope Innocent XII continued the layout works of the square started by Alexander VII and commissioned its adaptation to Carlo Fontana and his son Francesco.
